EU to Steam: Stop Geo-Blocking Games

European Commission to Steam: Stop Geo-Blocking Games

The European Commission wants Valve to stop geo-blocking games on its PC game store Steam. The eight countries in which Valve is accused of geo-blocking activation codes are Czechia, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, and in some cases Romania.

Valve said that just 3 percent of games on Steam were geo-locked when the EU first started investigating this issue back in 2013.

The move is part of the Commission's overall push for a Digital Single Market that limits restrictions to online commerce.

Companies that violate EU regulations can be fined up to 10 percent of their annual worldwide turnover.
